I gave up FB two years ago. I couldn’t be less interested in it at this point. I read more, have more quality relationships and conversations, and am less triggered and there for less toxic to others. Best choice I made. I started my own Substack because I had been using FB as a blog of sorts, and it’s nice to be writing again without all the toxicity and dumpster fires that are social media interactions now. I’m glad you are among a growing community of social media defectors: welcome!
"Read more" is exactly right. I replaced my Facebook and Twitter apps with the Kindle app, and made "read a book" my go-to time-killer instead of "scroll Twitter." Who knew being happier was so easy?
I permanently deleted all of my all social media accounts in 2019. Good riddance!! I've discovered that most of my friendships have actually improved since then! I have much more genuine and regular conversations with my friends. I do occasionally miss some people who I haven't had contact with since - but I rarely interacted with them outside of social media anyway, so I don't consider them true friendships.
I'm at a point in life where I'm disconnecting from internet culture as much as humanly possible. In today's day and age, there's obviously a certain level of internet usage that's impossible to get away from, especially at work. Thankfully, my job does not require social media usage!!
This has been my experience as well—it’s a lot easier to be kind and generous to the people around me in real life when I’m not poisoning my brain with the worst of humanity all day long
Really enjoyed this, I relate strongly to the addictive qualities of social media and how it burns me out. It's hard to go cold turkey, but limiting it is definitely the right thing to do
